April 10, 2015

OMRON Corporation (Headquarters: Kyoto City, Japan; President & CEO: Yoshihito Yamada) received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award at the fiscal 2015 Intellectual Property Achievement Awards from METI and the Japan Patent Office.

Based on Corporate Principle's, OMRON has formulated guiding principles that govern the execution of activities related to intellectual property. It also promotes a consistent approach to all its intellectual property activities. This award represents recognition of the company's efforts to promote an innovative intellectual property strategy that, in a tripartite approach, is closely linked to both its business and R&D activities.

OMRON is committed to forging ahead with its unsurpassed approach to intellectual property activities and will make efforts to create its corporate value and contribute to social development.

Key points behind OMRON's selection

  • In keeping with the Intellectual Property Policy drawn from the Intellectual Property Guidelines and based on its Corporate Philosophy, the business and intellectual property units act in unison when formulating business and technological strategies. The intellectual property scenarios* created in this process serve as the basis for the filing of patent applications. OMRON has also built processes and setups for identification of wants and needs among customers from the patent applications they have filed. In addition to their extensive applications when determining development tasks, these mechanisms facilitate licensing and cross-licensing, thereby assuring a high degree of freedom in the area of business development by enabling an easy-to-understand on-line commentary on the focal points and effects of major patents.
  • OMRON has built a global sales network spanning 80 countries. Its intellectual property division in Japan is joined by its sites in China, the United States, Europe, and Singapore in provision of support for activities related to such property in their respective areas. By so doing, they are striving to protect the OMRON brand on a global scale, and actively working on tasks such as surveillance for and early detection of infringements.
  • OMRON standardized the industry's first anti-islanding control technology (AICOT®), which prevents islanding conditions in multiple grid-linked photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems. The related patent has been partially released in connection with formulation of standards. AICOT technology is installed in all of OMRON's power conditioners aimed at the Japanese market, and is making a vital contribution to the spread of PV systems.

*) The scenario sets forth matters such as methodologies for the accumulation and utilization of technical assets.
