OMRON Releases Robust, Compact Safety Light Curtain(*1) to Increase Productivity for Global Production Lines

Kyoto, Japan -- OMRON Corporation (TSE: 6645, ADR: OMRNY) today announced the release in October of its new F3SG-R safety light curtain featuring a robust housing structure, safety functions for higher productivity, and reduced maintenance downtime.
The housing structure of the F3SG-R is significantly improved to enhance resistance against shock and vibration and to reduce the cross-section of the housing to approximately 60% of that of the previous model by reducing the housing material thickness from 3 mm to 2.5 mm*2.
The F3SG-R provides new functions to log the muting*3 status, to assist adjustment with visualized setting conditions, and to connect using Smartclick connectors*4, greatly reducing adjustment time required for installation compared to the previous model.
These functions prevent malfunctions caused by contact with a product or tool and unintended machine stops due to faulty installation or adjustment.
Troubleshooting in eight languages*5 will be published on the website to support global production. Operators across the world can check the causes and solutions of errors that occur during operation in their local languages and quickly troubleshoot, which will help them minimize downtime of their machines.
All models of the F3SG-R conform as standard to the Chinese standard GB 4584*6 for the first time in the industry*7. This allows the F3SG-R to be used for safety measures at production lines and to contribute to efficient installation of machines at production sites in China.
Moreover, the production of the F3SG-R will start in 2015 at four factories in Japan, China, United States, and Europe to make the F3SG-R easy to purchase and to reduce delivery times. OMRON supports implementation of safety measures for production sites worldwide.
Robust housing structure to prevent hardware troubles
The safety light curtain installed at the open area of the machine may malfunction due to contact of a product or tool. The housing structure of the new F3SG-R is significantly improved to enhance resistance against shock and vibration and to reduce the thickness of the thinnest part of the housing material from 3 mm to 2.5mm. The cross-section of the housing is reduced to approximately 60% of that of the previous model.
Muting function to minimize machine downtime
A general muting function distinguishes between products and workers based on the timing when multiple photoelectric sensors for muting installed at both sides of the safety light curtain detect. However, faulty installation of sensors caused unintended machine stops. TheF3SG-R provides the muting function that can use the bypass performance to increase safety and productivity. Special software is also provided to record the muting status in the safety light curtain and analyze the logged status to find optimal settings. This can minimize trial and error in adjustment, so adjustment time can be reduced by up to 80%*8 compared to the previous model. The F3SG-R has the industry's first dynamic muting mode that disables the safety function for the zone where products pass through and monitors workers entering the other zone (patent pending). The F3SG-R automatically measures the height of each product passing through and sets the muting zone, eliminating the need to set the zone in advance. For example, at the process to convey pallets with various heights, the F3SG-R can properly distinguish between workers and passing products to maintain safety without compromising productivity.
Smartclick connector to reduce wiring work
Smartclick connectors are used to connect cables. Connection just by turning the round waterproof M12 connecter 1/8 of a turn will drastically reduce time required for wiring and replacement and ensure reliable connection. This popular connector is used for a variety of OMRON products to reduce time required for wiring and replacement when many devices are connected together.
Multilingual troubleshooting website for global operators to improve maintenance efficiency
In order to minimize downtime of the machine due to safety light curtain errors, troubleshooting in eight languages*5 will be published on the website to find causes and solutions of errors that occur during operation. Operators across the world can check the error details in their local languages, which will help them minimize time to troubleshoot. In addition to accessing this website on a computer, operators can use a tablet or smartphone to easily access by scanning the 2D code on the sticker provided as an accessory.
