OMRON Accelerates Decarbonization in China “National Green Factory” Accreditation for OMRON Shanghai Factory

  • August 09, 2023

OMRON Corporation (Headquarters: Shimogyo-Ku, Kyoto, Japan; President and CEO: Junta Tsujinaga) has announced that the OMRON Shanghai Factory (hereafter “OMS”), part of OMRON’s Industrial Automation Business Company, has been certified under the Chinese government’s 2022 National Green Factory scheme, which recognizes model factories striving for both economic growth and reduction of environmental load.

The National Green Factory accreditation scheme was launched by the Chinese government in 2017 to promote environmentally-friendly manufacturing models. A core facility in OMRON’s Industrial Automation business, OMS received the accreditation for the first time this year, following a recommendation by the Shanghai city government recognizing the factory’s efforts to achieve a balance between productivity and energy-saving, such as the adoption of a system that renders energy use visible. OMS is also accelerating its initiatives to reduce environmental load, seeking to realize sustainable manufacturing by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and properly managing and curbing the use of chemical agents.

Xu Jian, Director and General Manager of OMRON China Management Center, had this to say about the achievement: “The National Green Factory scheme is an important means for promoting development of the manufacturing industry in China. Our certification recognizes us as a leader in the shift to low-carbon manufacturing and acceleration of the smart manufacturing revolution in China. As a specialist in the digital transformation of automation, OMRON has assisted in resolving a wide variety of issues confronting factories. Moving forward, we’ll continue to apply our expertise in automation and propose innovative technologies and solutions for our partners, in order to raise the sustainability and efficiency of manufacturing and to unlock people’s potential.“

Under the “Shaping the Future 2030” Long-term Vision launched in 2022, OMRON is pursuing three key social issues: “achieving carbon neutrality,” “implementing a digital society,” and “extending healthy life expectancy.” As it works toward “achieving carbon neutrality,” OMRON is taking company-wide approach to decarbonization and reduction of environmental load. In October 2022, it became the first Japanese company to join the international initiative on energy efficiency known as EP100, committing to raising energy productivity across the entire value chain including customers and partners, and striving to achieve carbon neutrality globally. In China, Shanghai OMRON Control Componets Co., Ltd. is producing products with clean energy by installing solar panels, and OMRON Dalian Co., Ltd. built in August 1, 2023 is realizing energy saving manegement in the production processes and using clean energy by installing solar panels, accelerating decarbonization in each factories. OMRON will continue working toward decarbonization and environmental load reduction not only in its own facilities but right across the value chain, and contribute to global efforts to build a sustainable society.

OMRON Shanghai Factory(OMS)
Established in Shanghai, China in 2005, OMS is a core production facility in OMRON’s Industrial Automation business. It is engaged in the production of industrial automation devices, research and development, technical support, and after-sales service. In pursuit of the concepts of “automation beyond human ability,” “advanced collaboration between humans and machines,” and “digital engineering innovation” under the “i-Automation!” banner of factory innovation, OMS strives to achieve sustainable automation that advances manufacturing to new levels at the same time as harmonizing with the global environment and giving people a sense of purpose at work. In order to address challenges currently confronting the China market such as rising personnel costs and diversifying consumer demand, OMS is using IoT, SPC (Statistical Process Control) and other means to appraise quality variability and risk management, continuously generating innovations in the digital arena, and adopting technologies that render the entire production line visible.

EP100
Organized by the UK-based international environmental non-profit organization The Climate Group, EP100 is an international initiative involving companies that commit to the goal of doubling the energy productivity of their business activities (by means such as 50% improvement in energy efficiency). EP100 is an abbreviation of “100% Energy Productivity,” signifying the goal of raising the energy productivity of businesses by 100%.
