OMRON to unveil "+ Think", the futuristic technology of the IoT and AI age at "CEATEC JAPAN 2016"

September 13, 2016

OMRON Corporation (Headquarters: Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto, President & CEO: Yoshihito Yamada) announced that it will participate in the CPS / IoT EXHIBITION "CEATEC JAPAN 2016", to be held in Chiba, Makuhari Messe, from October 4 to October 7, 2016.

The OMRON booth will display "+ Think" technology - the latest technology of the future - that lends machines a touch of human wisdom, to help provide the best solutions for individuals and society, and for the field of manufacturing.

Up to now, OMRON has been working to convert collected data into information that has real value for people using "sensing and control" as the core machine-controlling technology to tackle a variety of social issues.

OMRON has now added a "Think" element - representing human wisdom - to the mix, to create a new evolution in technology: "Sensing & Control + Think".

On the main stage this time, through "FORPHEUS" - the state-of-the-art AI (artificial intelligence) table tennis robot that has been further evolved technologically, OMRON will introduce its primary objective: a future in which man and machine grow together in mutual harmony.

And in each separate area - "Manufacturing", "Healthcare" and "Mobility", OMRON will show through demonstrations and presentations how "Sensing & Control + Think" is being used in efforts to address social problems that need to be solved.

FORPHEUS, the newly evolved table tennis robot, using cutting edge AI technology to achieve the "mutual growth of human and machine"

The table tennis robot "FORPHEUS" that became a hot topic in Japan and overseas when it first debuted at "CEATEC JAPAN 2014" has now evolved further and will be presented again here.

The 2016 version of FORPHEUS implements the AI technology "time-series deep learning" which allows the apparatus to instantly judge the performance level of opponents and tailor the way it hits balls back according to that level, thus improving the performance of the player.

Visitors can experience the evolution of the human-machine relationship from "cooperation" to "harmony" through a table tennis rally with "FORPHEUS".

Areas in the booth that demonstrate OMRON's futuristic social problem-solving technology

(1) "Manufacturing"

Using an AI-equipped robot in a crafting studio as an example, the demonstration shows one aspect of a factory of the future (a "Smart Factory") where visitors can see how "+ Think" allows man and machine to be optimally reconciled.

  • A robot equipped with its own AI technology bridges the present and the future of the manufacturing site.

(2) "Healthcare"

As stated in the company's slogan, OMRON's goal is "Reducing the development of cerebral and cardiovascular diseases to zero". Through video footage, OMRON will introduce its vision of a future society where everyone can live a long life in good health by demonstrating its new health sensing unit.

  • Technology that measures blood pressure levels continuously, beat by beat, at the wrist.

(3) "Mobility"

OMRON's unique sensing technology focuses on the state of the driver and aims toward the faster realization of a society with safer traffic, and automatic driving.

  • Automatic vehicle controlling demonstration using "concentration sensing technology" that measures the degree of the driver's concentration.
  • The "human sensing" technology essential to automatic driving.

(4) "Sensing Data Trading Market"

This area shows OMRON's vision of a prosperous future landscape where huge amounts of sensing data are collected from all over the world and distributed to be used freely.
