Service development for the manufacturing industry

INTERVIEW 01

Why did you choose OMRON DIGITAL when you were job hunting?

I had two reasons for joining OMRON DIGITAL.

First, I was drawn to the company culture that truly embodies its corporate philosophy. The second was that I wanted to improve my own skills by working with cutting-edge technologies.

As for the first reason, OMRON DIGITAL develops software for a wide range of products such as station operations equipment, payment terminals, healthcare devices, and factory automation equipment. The company not only contributes globally but also pursues greater safety and convenience for users. I felt this truly embodied the corporate motto, “With our work, we improve lives and create a better society,” and that through my own work I would be able to contribute to many people.

As for the second reason, before joining the company, I wanted to work on station operations systems, and since ODC is an industry leader, I could work with cutting-edge technologies such as data utilization in the IoT-enabled station operations business, which would allow me to grow as an engineer.

INTERVIEW 02

What kind of work are you currently responsible for?

I am currently engaged in business planning, specifically in formulating strategies needed to launch new businesses.

For example, I analyze ongoing business negotiations from multiple perspectives in order to clarify which customers our new business should target.

I am now in my third year. For the first two years I worked on developing applications used in manufacturing sites and had opportunities to work directly with factory automation equipment. Since 2020, I have been engaged in business planning as described above.

INTERVIEW 03

Please share an episode where you felt fulfillment, excitement, or joy in your work.

In business planning, formulating strategies requires verification data. Compared with my time in development, I now have many more opportunities to access information such as ongoing business negotiations and market trends. This has allowed me to see the distribution channels leading all the way to end users, which I had not been very aware of before. At the same time, learning through data that our company’s factory automation equipment and services are in strong demand gave me a sense that I was fulfilling my original motivation of “contributing to many people through my work,” which I find rewarding.

Since taking on this role, I have also had more opportunities to communicate with a wide range of people, from sales representatives to senior employees with many years of business strategy experience, to specialists on manufacturing floors. While I sometimes realize my own lack of knowledge about manufacturing—something that was not often taught at university—the knowledge I have gained has helped me in my work. When that knowledge contributes to formulating strategies with my team, I feel that I am growing.

INTERVIEW 04

What are your goals and dreams for the future?

Almost all of the daily products we use are manufactured in factories.

With technological innovation, manufactured products such as smartphones and PCs have enriched our lives. But the factories that support this way of life now face many challenges.
"For example, lifestyle changes are driving a shift from mass production and mass consumption to markets that demand high-mix, low-volume production. In addition, declining birthrates and aging populations have led to shortages of successors to inherit on-site know-how, and environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important. Omron offers many products and applications to solve these on-site challenges.

As one of its employees, my dream is to be involved in developing applications for such factory solutions—applications that can help improve on-site operations and be valued by the people who use them."
To that end, my immediate goal is to continue growing by gaining broad knowledge across both factory operations and software development, so that I can become an engineer who contributes even more to society.
