September 19, 2017
OMRON Corporation (HQ: Shimogyo-Ku, Kyoto. CEO: Yoshihito Yamada) has announced that it will exhibit at CEATEC JAPAN 2017, which is to be held in Makuhari, Chiba, from October 3 to October 7, 2017. The event serves as an innovation showcase that heralds the fourth industrial revolution, and is aimed forming a CPS/IoT committee and bringing about an ultra-smart society, or "Society 5.0".
OMRON has contributed much to the continued growth of society, working to resolve issues through its business by creating numerous innovations and products for the world. At CEATEC JAPAN 2017, OMRON will showcase in an easy-to-understand manner the evolution of its "Sensing & Control + Think" core technology, along with the company's aim of achieving human-machine harmony, through the fourth generation of its table tennis robot FORPHEUS. In addition, OMRON will show the various solutions achieved through its technological evolutions for solving problems, which will be divided into the areas of "Factory Automation", "Healthcare" and "Mobility".
The fourth generation of FORPHEUS this year shows further advancement in OMRON's robotics technology, including state-of-the-art "time-series deep learning" AI technology and "synchronous control", which takes advantage of the company's expertise in controllers and is used in manufacturing sites. In addition to using data drawn from table tennis rallies with a large number of players to instantly judge opponent performance level and tailor the way that it hits back accordingly, FORPHEUS now is equipped with new functionality for dealing with smashes - allowing advanced players to enjoy table tennis rallies at a level higher than what has been possible to date. In making this advancement, FORPHEUS has shown further evolution as a table tennis robot that brings out human capabilities and creativity in understanding people at a deeper level, using a deeper understanding of people to provide optimal support to each individual. Also appearing in the new-look FORPHEUS is support for table tennis beginners through a serve function to open play.
Domains in the booth where people can experience the future of harmonization between people and machines
"Factory Automation"
OMRON has reimagined the "Factory of the Future", which projects a little ahead to where people and machines work together. With decreasing populations in industrialized countries and soaring labor costs in emerging countries, there are numerous issues to be resolved for manufacturing sites. In particular, the simplistic and tedious heavy labor of moving parts and other goods represents an issue to be resolved. Visitors to the booth will be able to see OMRON's process for transporting parts through its use of the Mobile Robot LD Series, which are equipped with proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) technology and serve to free human workers from this kind of heavy labor. OMRON will present an image of humans and machines not only working with a division of roles but also one in which they sometimes cooperate with each other on the same task.
"Healthcare"
Serving to provide optimal medical treatment to fit the circumstances of each and every individual, OMRON will showcase its "Personalized Medical Service of the Future".The global population of those suffering from hypertension is said to be 1 billion people, 17.5 million of whom have reportedly had this lead to such brain and cardiovascular diseases as strokes and heat attacks. Visitors to the booth will be able to get a look at OMRON's efforts toward "zero cerebral and cardiovascular events". This will include a vision of the future for medical services utilizing AI technology, and a demonstration of the vital-sensing capabilities of a new device that will be indispensible to achieving these services.
"Mobility"
Visitors to the booth will be able to experience OMRON's "Autonomous Driving of the Future", which reads the driver's varying states and provides optimized feedback from the car in real time to enable safe movement. The expected implementation of autonomous driving promises to serve in reducing accidents and congestion. And necessary to autonomous driving will be OMRON's "Driver Monitoring" technology, which detects the driver's state of alertness and now employs even further advanced AI technology to be able to read a wider variety of driver states than what had been understood to date. Visitors will be able to experience the fruits of this evolution firsthand through a cockpit demonstration of the technology, where they will be able to find out for themselves how cars of the future will understand and respond to varying driver states.
