On-the-job training supported by in-house training and self-education support programs
OMRON's employee skill development system centers on on-the-job training (OJT). Complementing the system are in-house training and self-education support programs.
A wide range of in-house training programs are available, including rank- and role-specific training courses as well as many other purpose-specific programs. To enhance the effectiveness of education and training, OMRON seeks to link these programs with other initiatives.
Training programs for managers have been upgraded with the aim of enhancing “gemba” (business frontline) management, one of the main objectives of OMRON’s long-term management strategy “Value Generation 2020 (VG2020),” which covers the decade until fiscal 2020. Specifically, 360-degree evaluation (evaluations by supervisor, colleagues, and subordinates) was launched for managers in fiscal 2011. Based on the results of this evaluation, training began for strengthening “gemba” management capabilities. In fiscal 2012, the training program for newly promoted managers will be totally renovated to provide continuing and more practical education.
Moreover, a new education system for improving global responsiveness was launched in fiscal 2011 to enable strengthening of global management, a key concept of VG2020. The system also offers intensive training and practical skills training courses to help employees improve English proficiency.
In the future, OMRON will review its employee education system and individual training programs across the OMRON Group worldwide, to incorporate the perspective of promoting diversity, in order to strengthen global management.
