Revising purchasing polices to emphasize ecology and compliance

Since OMRON established its "open, fair and global" purchasing policies in 1999, OMRON has implemented fair transactions with its partners. In April 2007, these policies were revised with the aim of further promoting CSR procurement*, specifying key programs of "ecology" (reduction of environmental impact) and "compliance" (observance of laws, regulations and social norms).

Aiming to fulfill CSR across the entire supply chain, OMRON is determined to further promote CSR procurement in cooperation with its suppliers by taking the following steps sequentially:

  1. Share information regarding CSR matters with suppliers
  2. Assess status of CSR practices implemented by suppliers
  3. Conduct appropriate management

In accordance with the company's policy of fulfilling its social responsibility along with business development, and to share OMRON's philosophy behind CSR, OMRON forwarded a request letter to suppliers asking them to follow eight basic requirements related to quality maintenance, environmental conservation, respect for human rights and appropriate labor practices. Specific requirements included: no discrimination in recruiting and employment, no child labor or forced labor, establishment of an appropriate work environment, and other items.

* CSR procurement refers to efforts to extend a company's CSR commitment to cover purchasing and procurement processes, while requiring suppliers/business partners to practice CSR. Requirements include legal and regulatory compliance; forbiddance of forced labor and child labor; respect for human rights and diversity; forbiddance of illegal trading; and appropriate management of chemical substances and observance of regulations related to substances contained in products.
