OMRON blood pressure monitor and thermometer
win Universal Design Awards 2011

Two products from OMRON Healthcare Co., Ltd. received Germany’s Universal Design Awards 2011. Hosted by the Universal Design Association, the Universal Design Awards are a “one and only” prize to recognize universal design, by evaluating fairness, flexibility, safety, ease of use, and cost of products. Since fiscal 2008 when OMRON Healthcare received the Universal Design Award for the first time, this is the fourth successive year for the company to win this award.

The award-winning products are the automatic blood pressure monitor and electronic thermometer (6 models). The electronic thermometer also received Japan’s Good Design Award 2010. These two products also were winners of Germany’s iF Product Design Awards 2011. OMRON Healthcare will continue emphasizing usability and accuracy in the development of products, maintaining the perspective of users.

Examples of OMRON's universal design products

Besides these two products, the OMRON Group has developed many other universal design products. Released by OMRON Healthcare in November 2010, the handy massager developed with universal design in mind helps the user relieve muscle aches in a comfortable posture. The grip angle is adjustable to allow massaging the back and arms without having to raise the elbow. The grip tip also has a stopper to prevent slippage of the hand, reducing fatigue even when the unit is used for a long time.

In December 2010, OMRON Kyoto Taiyo started production of a voice-equipped electronic thermometer. This product is designed for visually impaired users, and provides a voice and alarm to indicate measurement procedures and readings. In the development stage, development staff engaged in discussions with the disabled staff of Omron Kyoto Taiyo to create a product that is easy to use not only for people who are visually impaired, but also for those who are not. This is the first attempt for OMRON to put staff with disabilities in charge of producing a product designed for disabled people.
