Basic approach and related initiatives
Product assessment at OMRON is intended to minimize the negative environmental impact of OMRON products at every stage, including production, distribution, use, maintenance, recovery, disposal and recycling; and to assure that its products fully comply with environmental laws and regulations in all relevant countries.
Conducted at the early stages of product planning, development and design, product assessment involves prediction and estimation of the potential impact of products on the environment. This is based on evidentiary data (objective data that forms the basis for judgment), which is evaluated by product assessment reviewers (third-party personnel other than the developer). This system has been in use at all production sites worldwide by fiscal 2005.
In fiscal 2006, OMRON concentrated on fostering and expanding reviewers to cope with its main issue associated with product assessment, namely promotion of system implementation outside Japan. As a result, the number of reviewers at overseas sites increased by 60 compared to fiscal 2005.
To reinforce its commitment to offering environmentally warranted products, OMRON strives to further the implementation of the product assessment system worldwide, with a focus on cultivation of product assessment reviewers.
