Environmental Education and Awareness Enhancement
Basic Polices
OMRON considers addressing environmental issues to be one of the most important management objectives for the Group. Accordingly, OMRON makes sure that all Group employees are provided with education and training regarding its environmental policies based on the OMRON Principles.
OMRON implements various environmental education and awareness-raising programs. These programs are intended to encourage all Group employees to demonstrate concern for environmental protection, act on their own initiative and take necessary action, whether at work, at home, in the local community or in society at large. Another aim is to make OMRON serve as the center for heightening environmental awareness at both the local and global levels.
FY2011 Overview
Environmental education
Each year, OMRON conducts awareness-raising activities in the Environmental Month of June. In fiscal 2011, the general manager of the Environmental Innovation Center of the Global Business Innovation HQ addressed all Group employees through the ON-net internal communication media as part of these activities. The center is tasked with planning and promoting the OMRON Group’s environmental strategies. In his message, the general manager stressed the need for OMRON to address environmental issues as a company committed to “working for the benefit of society.”
Beginning in fiscal 2011, solicitation of environmental slogans, which had been an ongoing corporate-wide event, was conducted individually at each site in order to more closely familiarize employees with environmental preservation.
As for environmental education, OMRON headquarters provided a new employee education program, while each site planned and conducted its own environmental education programs to enhance employee awareness of environmental issues. At each site, education programs for qualified personnel are also available to help internal environmental auditors and environmental impact assessors improve their skills.
In addition to these regular education programs, in fiscal 2011 a common program for all sites was implemented to provide specialized education for instructors who train and advise internal environmental auditors and environmental impact assessors. These programs coincided with efforts toward acquiring unified environmental management system (EMS) certification.
In the future, OMRON will select and organize information to be offered to qualified personnel and those in charge of environmental affairs, in order to raise the quality of educational programs.

Ongoing Initiatives toward Acquisition of Unified EMS Certification
To raise the skills of internal environmental auditors and environmental impact assessors, education for qualified personnel has been offered at each site.
In fiscal 2011, as acquisition of unified environmental management system (EMS) certification was promoted, ongoing specialized education was offered at each site for instructors who give guidance to internal environmental auditors and environmental impact assessors as a common EMS program.
Employees’ Energy-saving Efforts at Home
By displaying posters on office bulletin boards mainly in the Kansai region, OMRON encouraged employees to take advantage of the “Eco Eyeglass※1” service, which enables realtime monitoring of electricity usage at home. The number of employees who applied for the “Eco Eyeglass” service was only 75, but assessment of electricity usage at employees’ homes helped enhance their awareness in a practical, real-world manner.
As for the Eco-Volun initiative※2, in the winter of 2011 electricity-saving efforts at home were added to the list of activities through which employees can earn points. Mainly through this activity, the total number of points earned increased to 1.8 times that of the same month of the previous year, proving effective for promoting awareness and practice of energy conservation at home.
※1 “Eco Eyeglass” is a cloud service that enables users to monitor electricity output and consumption by installing an electric power sensor on the home distribution board. Users can then receive regular reports on solar power generation output via a PC, smartphone, or mobile phone. Users can also convert CO2 emissions rights into cash or refunds.
※2 Eco-Volun is an OMRON-original initiative intended to encourage OMRON Group employees throughout the world to engage in environmental preservation and volunteer activities. By doing this, employees become more aware of the importance of social contribution.
